Michael "Rev Kane"
I don't run, unless there's a ball in front of me or something behind me trying to eat me. So it's natural that I'm a walker. I've always been a day hiker but as of my 40th birthday I started doing larger things to celebrate my birthdays every 5 years. When I turned 45 I turned up the volume a bit and decided to hike to base camp on Mount Everest, which of course meant becoming prepared for the endeavor. To do so I took 7 months off of work and my 7 months included:
* Bicycling for a week around Western Ireland
* Hiking the Great Glen Way in Scotland
* Hiking daily for 3 months in and around Bryce Canyon National Park
* 22 Day High Passes Trek in the Himalayas, 16 days above 15000 ft, max elevation 17,700ft
So as I've turned 50 this year it's time to do something bigger, so the plan is a little 2200 mile walk in the woods on the AT, then back to Scotland to do both the Western Highland and Great Glen Ways and the 100 mile loop on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland.
Why I'm hiking the AT:
The simplest way I can explain this is that adventure, like thru-hiking the AT is transformational, and I want to live a transformational life.
